How can I keep my passwords safe?

We care about your account security, and we’re happy to assist here! For starters, keep your passwords in a secure place that’s out of plain sight. Don’t share them on the internet, over email or on the phone. Additionally, be mindful that hackers may try to figure out your passwords to gain access to your computer. To make it tougher for them:

  • Use passwords that have at least twelve characters and include numbers and symbols. The longer the password, the tougher it is to crack.
  • Avoid common words. Some hackers use programs that can try every word in the dictionary.
  • Don’t use your personal information, your login name or adjacent keys on the keyboard as passwords.
  • Change your passwords regularly (at a minimum, every 90 days).
  • Don’t use the same password for each online account you access.

Fear not! For your security, your online banking account will be locked if the password or verification code is entered incorrectly five times. Note: To avoid usernames and passwords that are easy to guess, consider using complex combinations of lower- and upper-case letters, numbers and symbols. Also, make sure your usernames and passwords are at least eight characters in length.

As a safety measure to prevent unwanted access to your account, and to protect your personal and financial information, we may ask you to provide a one-time passcode using two-factor authentication (2FA) from time to time. Events that may spark the need for this extra layer of security include:

  • A recently failed log-in attempt
  • Logging in from an unknown device
  • Logging in from a new network

If you’d like, you can adjust your account settings to use 2FA each time there’s a log-in attempt. To do so, simply navigate to “Tools,” then select “Settings” and “Security” to access and adjust your preferences.
